Outdoor Gear for Forest School

We are outdoors almost all of our time, every day — rain or shine, cold or hot. To keep your child comfortable and safe, please make sure they arrive to the forest with appropriate clothing and outdoor gear for the weather each day.

The lists below serve as a guideline as you prepare for the year. When in doubt, overpack — extra layers can always be added or taken off as the day warms or cools.

Every Day, All Seasons

Essentials

Outdoor clothing that's okay to get dirty — long pants are recommended to help prevent injury and bug bites
No dresses or skirts without shorts underneath
Closed-toed shoes (no sandals or flip-flops)
Non-spill water bottle (water only)
A daypack with all items labeled and a full change of clothes

By Season

Summer

Sun hat
Sunscreen
Bug spray
Bathing suit
Water shoes
Towel
Cold lunch with an ice pack

Fall & Spring

Long sleeve base layer
Warm jacket
Fleece
Wool socks (no ankle socks)
Waterproof hiking shoes or BOGS boots

Winter

Base layers
Weatherproof jacket with a hood
Snow pants
BOGS or snow boots
Waterproof mittens
Neck gaiter
Warm hat that covers the ears

Need Gear?

If you are unable to provide required items for your child, please speak with our director. We keep a variety of extra gear on hand for families in need — no child should miss out on the forest for lack of a warm coat or a pair of boots.
